Chalice

This chalice is a great example of the transition from the late Gothic period to the Renaissance in religious art. The majority of the forms are evidently classical, a sign that transition was about to end. The cup is conical and has a lower, rounded profile for a base. This base is detailed with botanical forms, masks of the “green man” and pairs of birds. The six lobed base is rounded with simple borders and a thick molding. Three of the lobes enclose images in bas relief: Saint Francis showing his stigmata, Saint Andre and the Virgin with the Child Jesus.
